Sterling Silver Claddagh Ring
The Claddagh is a traditional Irish ring featuring a heart held by two hands with a crown and represents "Love" (the heart), "Loyalty" (the crown), and "Friendship" (the hands). The design and customs associated with it originated in Claddagh, County Galway. Its modern form was first produced in the 17th century.
There are several customs associated with the Irish Claddagh. Traditionally it was thought to be worn as a betrothal or wedding ring, and in modern Ireland, United States, and Canada the tradition is sometimes associated with a parent handing down the ring to a child or grandchild.
Although many families have their own customs surrounding the Claddagh, according to Irish author Colin Murphy, a Claddagh ring is traditionally worn with the intention of conveying the wearer's relationship status:
- On the right hand with the point of the heart toward the fingertips: the wearer is single and might be looking for love.
- On the right hand with the point of the heart toward the wrist: the wearer is in a relationship; someone "has captured their heart"
- On the left ring finger with the point of the heart toward the fingertips: the wearer is engaged.
- On the left ring finger with the point of the heart toward the wrist: the wearer is married.
